Now, more than ever, moms are becoming more active in the household.  Gone are the days when moms stayed at home to watch over their children and attend to matters of the family.  WAH moms are increasing in number, and along with this comes a great responsibility for these career moms to balance work and family.

So how do WAH moms successfully balance work and family?

Setting the Ground Rules

Balancing family and work at home takes a lot of planning.  You have to prepare not only yourself for the transition, but other member of the family as well.  Especially if you have little children who still need your care and attention, you might consider getting child care. This frees your time at home, so you can focus on work. You can also set an open door-closed door policy with your older kids, for them to know when you can be disturbed or not. The “do not touch list” will also come in handy. As much as possible, the quality of your work shouldn’t suffer just because you’re working at home. The whole family should be involved in helping you balance career and family.

Keeping Your Kids Active and Busy

As much as possible, you want your children to be focused on other things when you work.  This way, they are kept busy, so you can put your whole mind into getting your job done.  Plan ahead and schedule activities that your kids enjoy.  You can enroll them in summer camp, get them to read books and practice independent play indoors and outdoors.

Managing Money and Expenses

Even as a work at home mom, you have the responsibility of handling the finances at home.  Manage this well and look for ways to cut your monthly budget.  Because you are now working at home, you can save a lot of money in fuel and transportation costs, lunch expenses, and more.  This can be used to build up your household savings.

Taking Care of Yourself

On top of work and family, WAH moms should not neglect themselves too.  Everyone needs a little treat, and if you want to continue working harmoniously at home with your spouse and children, you also have to unwind and treat yourself.  This relieves stress and tension and makes you generally happy to avoid conflicts.
